Learn local: Flaxmere College

August 2022

The brand-new learning spaces at Flaxmere College are creating a huge buzz, as primary school students heading to college make a decision on which school they will attend.

The students from the three Flaxmere primary schools who take technology at the college are already excited to be using the new technology rooms, says principal James Hay-Mackenzie.

“We’ve also hosted the teachers of the senior primary students at the college, so they can see the types of facilities on offer to their students who are taking that next big step.”

Another opportunity to have a good look around was an Open Day for 2023 students, held on August 4, when about 150 people took a tour through the brand-new facilities. Those who enrol before 20th October go into a draw for one of five chrome books, while all year 7-9 students receive their first year’s stationary free. The college also offers free music tuition, and free breakfast, morning tea, and lunch.

The college has room for more students, and is open about wanting more Flaxmere whānau to choose their local college. “We have about 300 students now, and with our new facilities we have room to grow. Our staff work hard to provide an excellent education in a very caring wrap-around whānau atmosphere for our students, and all close to their Flaxmere homes,” says Mr Hay-Mackenzie.

By the time the new students head to class next year, the final parts of the rebuild will be almost completed: the renovation of the gym is well underway, and demolition of the old buildings has also started. The final touch will be the last of the landscaping.
